A Misconception about Myofascial Release

The one misconception people have when they come to see me for a Myofascial Release session is expecting to begin pain during and after their session. They believe that there is alot of digging into the muscles and it will be very aggressive. People are usually expecting a deep tissue massage and are very surprised to learn that is not what they will experience for their one hour session.

The John Barnes’ Method of Myofascial Release, is not aggressive in the least bit.

So, what should you expect?

  1. Each session is individualized.

  2. Each technique is applied into the resistance of the body and held for 3-7 minutes or until there is a release.

  3. Many people experience “therapeutic pain” that will gradually ease up as fascia releases. Sometimes people describe this as a “feel good” type of discomfort.

  4. You may feel relaxed during your session.

  5. You may feel emotional during your session.

When we apply sustained pressure into and area of the body, we can expect some discomfort. When an area of the body has been tight, locked up, it has been caught up in a holding pattern. Rather than force the tissue to release, we ease into the tissue , we wait at the fascial barrier and the fascia will elongate and release. Forcing and treating aggressively will cause the client to brace, either because they are expecting pain or experiencing pain. Bracing will cause tighter restrictions.
